Enhanced Bio and Career Goals Essay

      Hello, my name is Robert Walsh, and I am from Tampa, Florida. I consider myself fortunate to have had such an excellent life experience up to this point, which has been filled with so many opportunities to enjoy, learn, work, and give back. English is my native language. However, I have briefly studied French and Spanish. I have an extensive background that consists of working with data, information, computers (hardware, software, and networking), databases, and graphic design. I developed an interest in learning more about information science, data science, and analytics as modern technology grew so powerful that people rely on digital devices to live their lives. I recognized that there was a need for people with a refined skill set to work at higher levels in this field. My goal then became to obtain my bachelor's degree. The BSIS program at USF has allowed me to continue exploring fundamental topics, such as reading, writing, and math, as well as more specialized topics like computers, business, information policy/behavior, project management, and leadership. My family and my passion for life have motivated me to work hard at gaining meaningful experience through my education and career that can be used to make a difference in all that I do to be a better global citizen.

      My experience began with my primary high school education and entry-level jobs, which provided me with a well-rounded understanding of the world, society, and what it takes to succeed. I eventually earned an associate's degree in software development, which has led me to work and study in various roles. Through this education, I became proficient in several computer programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, PHP, C++, C#, R, and SQL. I have experience as an account executive and a software developer with expertise in databases and web development, working in the manufacturing industry. This includes working with platforms like Microsoft Visual Studio and Azure, MySQL, RStudio, Adobe Photoshop, and HTML/CSS applications. Working within this industry allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the knowledge and skills necessary to advance in my career. Two of my current goals are to obtain my CompTIA certification and complete my bachelor's degree. After managing several web software development projects and leading workforce sales teams, I recognized that further education in information science, project management, statistical analysis, and computer programming would be necessary to take my career to the next level and obtain my desired profession.

      Therefore, I am currently completing my senior year at the University of South Florida (GO BULLS!), where I am pursuing a bachelor's degree in information science with a concentration in data science and analytics. Through the BSIS program at USF, I was able to build upon my existing math skills and learn more about topics like physics, statistics, algebra, calculus, and trigonometry. The program included plenty of reading/reflection, and I developed critical thinking skills necessary to comprehend and develop potential solutions to modern challenges. Written assignments significantly improved my communication skills, enabling me to produce higher-quality written work that clearly conveys the message. Working with computers enabled me to build upon my prior skill set and enhance my capabilities in Java, R, SQL, and HTML/CSS while also experiencing real-life business simulations. Probably the most important topic in the program was learning more about information policy and behavior. Learning about the risks and ethical consequences associated with the development and implementation of future technology has become increasingly important, given the significant stakes involved. Thus, the program was an excellent learning experience for leading, participating in, and managing projects in a professional environment. Understanding how people interact with information was key to becoming a better leader or manager, approaching ethical dilemmas, finding the best possible solutions, reflecting on actions, and resolving conflicts.

      After completing the program and graduating, I plan on working as a database administrator (DBA) because the database aspect of information science interests me the most. The core of every modern business and every modern organization is its data. Therefore, the Database Administrator (DBA) profession has become necessary in the field of Information Science. According to O*NET Online (2025), DBAs “administer, test, and implement computer databases, applying knowledge of database management systems.” DBAs are also responsible for optimizing an organization's databases. Skills such as complex problem-solving, critical thinking, active listening, reading comprehension, judgment, and decision-making are necessary (O*NET Online, 2025). These skills are taught and refined through praxis, critical thinking, and reflection in the BSIS program at USF. Online survey results show that 89% of respondents mentioned that a bachelor's degree was the required education that a new hire would need to perform the requirements for the occupation, and that median wages were up to $104,620 annually (O*NET Online, 2025). In my early career days, I primarily focused on learning as much as possible and developing my skills to the best of my ability. It was not until later in my career that I realized the importance of using my knowledge and skills to influence others in learning how to improve their skills. For this reason, project management and leadership have become just as important in my career as developing my skills. I firmly believe that any person is only as effective as the combined efforts of the team, group, or organization they are a part of professionally.
